LONDON — A British MP has been found guilty of harassment and is expected to face calls to stand down from her seat.

Claudia Webbe, the independent MP for Leicester East, was accused of harassing a female friend of her partner with a series of unwanted phone calls.

She allegedly called the woman a “slag,” threatened her with an acid attack and said she would distribute naked pictures of her to her family.

Webbe was elected as Labour MP for Leicester East in 2019 but was suspended from the party after she was charged and now sits as an independent. She had denied the allegation against her, telling the court she had phoned her partner’s friend to warn her against breaking lockdown rules, but the magistrate dismissed this.

During the trial Webbe received character references from figures including former Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn, ex-Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell and former Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott.

Following the verdict, she said she was “deeply shocked” at the outcome of the trial and that she would appeal the verdict.
