Keir Starmer tests positive for COVID-19

LONDON — Labour leader Keir Starmer will miss Wednesday’s budget speech in the House of Commons after testing positive for COVID-19, the party said.

Ed Miliband, the shadow secretary of state for business, energy and industrial strategy, took Prime Minister’s Questions and Rachel Reeves, the shadow chancellor, is expected to respond to the budget.

Before the news was announced, Starmer tweeted the budget “must create a more resilient economy and take the pressure off working people.”

Chancellor Rishi Sunak told the Cabinet earlier that the budget will lead to a “stronger economy for the British people” with reducing inequality as a “golden thread” running through it, a Downing Street spokesman said.
